Turkish wrestlers Soner Demirtaş in men’s 74 kg and Yakup Gör in men’s 65 kg claimed a quota place for Rio 2016 Olympic Games on the third and last day (24 April) of the first of two final qualifying tournaments for wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games held in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.
Soner Demirtaş defeated Korean Yunseok Lee 10-0 in the first qualification match, Tajikistani Gamid Dzhalilov 6-0 in the second, Latvian Alberts Jurcenko 9-0 in the quarterfinals, Ukranian Oleh Bilotserkivskyi 4-0 in the semi-finals. He won against Bulgarian Georgi Ivanov Ivanov 12-1 in the final match to earn a ticket for Rio 2016.
Other Turkish wrestler Yakup Gör defeated Swiss Steven Graf 11-0 in the first match of the qualifications and American Frank Aniello Molinaro 6-4 in the second, Korean Seungchul Lee 11-1 in the quarterfinals but lost to Bahraini Adam Batırov 7-2 in the semi-finals. Yakup defeated Bulgarian Borislav Stefanov Novachkov 4-2 in the best third place match to face Slovenian David Habat in the semi-finals. He won 6-0 to win the bronze medal and a spot in Rio 2016.
Taha Akgül in men’s freestyle 125 kg, Selim Yaşar in men’s freestyle 86 kg, İbrahim Bölükbaşı in men’s freestyle 97 kg, Elif Jale Yeşilırmak in women’s freestyle 58 kg, Buse Tosun in women’s freestyle 69 kg, Yasemin Adar in women’s 75 kg, Hafize Şahin in women’s freestyle 63 kg and Rıza Kayaalp in men’s Greco-Roman 130 kg had already qualified for Rio 2016 Olympic Games in wrestling.
