Turkish Wrestlers Selçuk Çebi in men’s Greco-Roman 75 kg and Cenk İldem in men’s Greco-Roman 98 kg qualified to Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Second Olympic Games Wrestling World Qualifying Tournament held in Bağcılar Sports Complex in Istanbul, Turkey.
Selçuk Çebi defeated Bakhit Sharif K Badr from Qatar 8-0 in the qualification match, German Pascal Eisele 3-0 in the 1/8 match, Croatian Bozo Starcevic 3-0 in the quarterfinals and Slovenian Jure Kuhar 2-0 in the semi-finals. Selçuk won the gold medal and his ticket to Rio 2016 as his Bulgarian opponent Daniel Tihomirov Aleksandrov couldn’t show up because of his injury.
Cenk İldem defeated Uzbek Abrorbek Mamasoliev 7-0 in the 1/8 match, Greek Georgios Koutsioumpas 3-0 in the quarterfinals and German Oliver Adrian Hassler 4-2 in the semi-finals. Cenk won the gold medal and qualified to Rio 2016 when his Italian opponent Daigoro Timoncici couldn’t show up because of his injury.
Other Turkish wrestler Metehan Başar in men’s Greco-Roman 85 kg defeated Japanese Masato Sumi 1-0 in the qualification match, Croatian Nenad Zugaj 3-0 in the 1/8 match, Polish Tadeusz Michalik 6-0 in the quarterfinals but lost to German Denis Maksymilian Kudla 2-1 in the semi-finals. Başar defeated Czech Artur Omarov 2-0 in the bronze medal match. Rahman Bilici in men’s Greco-roman 59 kg defeated Armenian Roman Amoyan with technical superiority despite the 4-4 tie in the qualification match. Bilici defeated Finnish Jani Jukka Haapamaeki 4-0 in the 1/8 match but lost to Moldavian Donior Islamov 4-4 in the quarter-finals and got eliminated. Another Turkish wrestler Yunus Şaban in men’s Greco-Roman 66 kg lost his first match against Moldavian Daniel Cataraga 4-2 and eliminated.
The tournament will continue with women’s freestyle wrestling tomorrow and with men’s on the third and last day.
