The Turkish Olympic Committee (TOC) and International Canoeing Federation (ICF) have concluded a workshop for canoe and kayak coaches in the city of Antalya, Turkey from 6-8 December.
The workshop was conducted by the ICF, Turkish Canoeing Federation (TKF) with financial support from the TOC and the Olympic Solidarity fund.
The workshop is part of the TOC’s “Coach Development Seminars and Support Programs”, which aims to develop the skills and quality of professional sports coaches in Turkey.
The workshop was led by international professional canoe and kayak coaches, and focused on preparations for competitions, improving athletes’ training regimes and improving their technical abilities.
The seminar also focused on training modelling, competition rules, preventive medicine in sports and technical and tactical training planning.
Speaking on the benefits and structure of the workshop, TKF President Alper Kabakçı said:
“With the support of the TOC, Olympic Solidarity and ICF, we have provided useful training for more than 90 canoe and kayak coaches, who were taught by some of the leading international professionals in their fields.
“Through the workshop, we are ensuring that our coaches have access to the latest best practices and techniques in the sport. I strongly believe, as do our participants and trainees, that these seminars are important for the development of canoeing and kayaking in Turkey.
“For the first time this year, we included our slalom coaches in our seminar. We will do our best to expand these seminars in the coming years.”
The director of the program and ICF instructor Adnan Aliev said:
“During this seminar, we discussed how canoeing and kayaking techniques should be, how training will be made systematic and athletes between the ages of 12 and 18 will be guided towards professionalism. Of course, in order to increase success, we expect our coaches to make more efforts to improve themselves.”
One of the coaches who took part in the seminar, Orhan Turan, said:
“For us, the seminar was very useful. We learnt different techniques and training methods which we can pass on to our students. This gives our new athletes the chance to work with the latest best practices and techniques so they can improve their performances at competitions.”
Speaking on how the seminar helps coaches, Turkish coach Damla Güldoğan said:
“There are not enough female coaches in Turkey, but our national federation and the TOC are providing us with great support to boost this number. With the information we have obtained here, we will continue fighting for our students to take part and gain success in this sport. On behalf of every participant of this seminar, I would like to thank the TOC, Olympic Solidarity, ICF and of course the TKF for the opportunity to grow and develop both ourselves and the sport."
