The XXXI Rio 2016 Olympic Games takes a start with the Opening Ceremony held at the Maracaná Stadium (Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho) in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Minister of Youth and Sport HE Akif Çağatay Kılıç, Undersecretary Faruk Özçelik, Deputy Undersecretary Kamuran Özden, Turkish Olympic Committee (TOC) President and IOC Vice-President Prof. Dr. Uğur Erdener were present at the stadium where Sports General Director and Chef de Mission of Turkish Olympic Team Mehmet Baykan and TOC Secretary General Neşe Gündoğan paraded with the Team. World Champion and London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist wrestler Rıza Kayaalp proudly beared the Turkish Flag.
The Olympic Cauldron was lit by Brazilian runner Vanderlei de Lima Cordeiro.
Turkey participates at the Games with 48 women, 55 men, a total of 103 athletes in 21 sports.
In archery, Turkish archer Yasemin Ecem Anagöz finished the women’s ranking round in the 25th place out of 64 archers with a score of 638 in the 72-arrow. Yasemin will compete against Karina Lipiarska-Palka of Poland on August 10th at 16:44 hrs in 1/32 eliminations. In men’s, Mete Gazoz finished 29th among 64 with a total score of 661. Gazoz is to meet French Pierre Plihon in 1/32 eliminations on August 8th at 22:18.
