Turkey’s talented young athletes won their first four medals of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) on day two in Gyor, with three of the four medals coming in Judo.
Judoka Mihrac Akkus defeated Georgia’s Beka Tsifiani in the final of the boy’s -55kg category to be crowned champion and win Turkey’s first gold medal of the week. Turkey won two further medals in judo, with Ozge Andic and Ejder Tokay winning bronze in the girl’s -44kg and boy’s -50kg categories respectively.
The other medal of the day was won Demirkan Demir in the boy’s 100m breaststroke final. Demir’s impressive time of 1:03,62 was only bettered by Caspar Corbeau (1:03,42) of the Netherlands, and Vladislav Gerasimenko (1:02,20) of Russia.
Turkey’s tennis players also made good progress on day two, with Kaan Cepel and Betina Tokac both securing straight-sets victories in the singles competition. Tokac and Zeynep Sena Sarioglan then secured an impressive three-set win against Bulgaria in girl’s doubles competition to keep up their hopes of a gold medal.
It was also another successful day for Turkey’s basketball teams, with the girls comfortably beating Italy 70-42 and the boys claiming their second victory in as many games with a 72-59 win against Estonia.
23 of the 50 competing nations have already won medals so far this week, with Russia currently leading the table with seven golds. Turkey are fourth in the table and will now look to build on a successful second day.
