Turkey’s young athletes finished the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in style yesterday in the Hungarian city of Gyor.
Batuhan Çakır’s outstanding triple jump performance was the highlight of the day, with his 14.94m jump seeing him win the gold medal.
On the last day of competition, Münevver Hancı won silver in the girl's javelin with a best throw of 55.25m. Julia Valtanen from Finland won gold with a best throw of 58.11m.
An excellent week for the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams finished with one silver and one bronze medal yesterday. The girls defeated Germany 63-58 to take the bronze medal, whilst the boys won silver after losing 103-101 to Lithuania in overtime in an incredibly close encounter.
Turkey finished seventh in the medal table with an impressive total of 19 medals – five gold, six silver and eight bronze. Russia finished top of the table with 30 golds, with Italy’s excellent final day seeing them finish second with 14 golds.
The Closing Ceremony took place last night at the Athletes’ Village, with all 50 countries gathering to celebrate an excellent week in Gyor.
