Thursday 09 August proved Turkey’s best day yet at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin as Ramil Guliyev won gold in the 200m final whilst Yasmani Copello bagged silver after finishing second in the 400m hurdles final.
Yasmani Copello was unfortunate to miss out on gold after setting a new Turkish record of 47.81. He was beaten to first place by Norway’s Karsten Warholm who set a new European U23 record of 47.64.
Later it in the evening it was Turkish sprinter Ramil Guliyev’s time to shine in the 200m final at the Olympiastadion Berlin. Guliyev did not disappoint and produced an explosive performance which set a new championship record of 19.76 to win Turkey’s first gold of the tournament.
“This is a fast track, a great audience and we had great conditions,” said Guliyev. “I really enjoyed this moment and I have to say big thank you to all the fans.”
Turkey’s men’s gymnastics team made history by qualifying for the final of a European Championship which takes place later today in Glasgow.
