It has been a good week for Turkey at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), with the young athletes having won four gold, three silver and six bronze medals after five days of competition. Tomorrow, on the final day of the festival, the boy’s basketball team have the chance to add another gold to Turkey’s tally.
Turkey defeated a strong Croatian team in the semi-finals on Friday evening, with the score finishing 77-70. After starting the better of the two teams, Turkey were leading 44-24 at half-time. However, Croatia recovered well in the second-half, and with less than ten minutes left were only 4 points behind. Turkey showed their quality in the final few minutes to hold onto lead and book a place in tomorrow’s final.
Elsewhere, swimmer Aleyna Özkan won a bronze medal in the girl's 100m Butterfly with a time of 1:01,12, and young judoka Ömer Kemal Aydın won bronze in the +90kg category.
With one day of competition left, Turkey currently sit in seventh place in the medal table. Russia are comfortably top with 22 gold medals and host nation Hungary are second with 12 golds.
