Two bronze medals in taekwondo at Tokyo 2020

On Sunday 25 July our national Taekwondo athletes Hatice Kübra İlgün and Hakan Reçber claimed Turkey’s first medals of Tokyo 2020 as they each bagged bronze medals.

In shooting, Ömer Akgün scored 629.8 points in the 10m air rifle qualifying round and finishing 5th and qualifying to the final. In the final, which we reached for the first time in our Olympic shooting history, our athlete finished fourth with 207.3 points.

Nazlı Savranbaşı finished her qualification with 12.200 points in women’s vault, 11,933 points in the uneven bars, 11,033 points on the balance beam and 11,933 points on the floor in the women's qualifying, and placed 40th in the general classification.

Competing in foil, fencer İrem Karamete was eliminated in the first round after losing to her American rival Nicole Ross by 15-5.

In weightlifting, Muhammed Furkan Özbek lifted 142kg in snatch 67-kg, while he failed three lifts in the clean and jerk and could not enter.

In rowing, Onat Kazaklı finished his series in 4th place in the quarter-finals with a time of 7:32.86. Our athlete will compete to qualify for the C final on Tuesday 27 July.

Hakan Reçber defeated Brazil’s Edival Pontes 25-18 in his first -68 kg taekwondo match and reached the quarter finals. Losing 39-19 to Britain’s Bradly Sinden in the quarter-finals, our athlete defeated New Zealand’s Tom Burns 23-8 in repechage to qualify for the bronze medal match. Defeating Nedzad Husic from Bosnia and Herzegovina 22-13, Hakan Reçber won the bronze medal and obtained our first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Hatice Kübra İlgün defeated her Costa Rican rival Nishi Lee Lindo Alvarez 16-5 in the first round of -57kg and advanced to the quarter finals. Defeating Anastasija Zolotic of the USA 17-9 in the quarter-finals, our athlete then defeated Moroccan Nada Laaraj 6-0 in repechage and entered the bronze medal match. Hatice Kübra İlgün won the bronze medal by defeating Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin from the IOC Refugee Team 8-6 in this match.

In volleyball, our national team defeated China 3-0 in the first match of the group. The Sultans of the Net will face Italy on July 27 in the group.

In sailing Ecem Güzel completed the first laser radial race, in which 44 athletes competed, in 4th place, and came 24th in the second race. Our athlete is in 12th place at the end of the two races. While 27 athletes competed in the RS:X Women's Class, Dilara Uralp finished the first race 16th, the second race 22nd and the third race 23rd. Uralp is in 21st place with 38 net points. In the RS:X Men's class, where 25 athletes competed, Onur Cavit Biriz placed 15th in the first race, 19th in the second race and 20th in the third race. After three races, Biriz is in 19th place with 34 net points.

In the 400m freestyle heats in swimming, Beril Insectler did not qualify for the finals with 4:08.27 and Merve Tuncel 4:11.06. Baturalp Ünlü, on the other hand, could not make it to the semi-finals with a time of 1:49.75 in the men’s 200m freestyle.
