Turkish judoka Kayra Sayit in women’s +78kg became the champion on the third day (23 April) of the Judo European Championships held in Kazan, Russia. Other Turkish judoka Belkıs Zehra Kaya in same weight category placed third and won the bronze medal.
After having a bye in the first fight of the preliminary round, she defeated Hungarian Mercedesz Szigetvari in her first match, number one seeded French Emilie Andeol in the quarterfinals, Lithuanian Santa Pakenyte in the semi-finals and Ukranian Svitlana Iaromka in the final match to become the European champion.
Other Turkish judoka Belkıs Zehra Kaya defeated Maryna Slutskaya from Belarus in her first match in the preliminary round but lost to German Jasmin Kuelbs in the quarterfinals. After defeating Russian Ksenia Çibisova in the repechage and Lithuanian Santa Pakenyte in the 3rd place competition, Belkıs won the bronze medal.
The European Judo Championships 2016 for Individuals which started on 21st of April, has come to an end today. Winning a bronze medal with Turkish Dilara Lokmanhekim in women’s 48kg on the first day of the championship, Turkey placed 7th among 46 countries in the medals ranking.
