Turkey won 3 gold, 1 silver and 6 bronze, in total 10 medals on the fourth and last day (11 April) of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President’s Cup 2016 in Bonn, Germany. Turkey finished the tournament with a total of 28 medals and placed second in general ranking.
WTF President’s Cup was held for the first time by European Taekwondo Union (ETU) with the participation of 1.600 athletes from 60 countries. The Turkish Taekwondo Team consisted of 79 athletes, 42 women - 37 men.
19 Turkish athletes competed on the last day of the WTF President’s Cup. İrem Yaman won the gold and Tuğba Ayva won bronze medal in women’s 62 kg. Şeyma Nur Söğüt in 73 kg and Berk Can Süngü in men’s 74 kg won bronze medals. With these results, İrem Yaman, Şeyma Nur Söğüt and Berk Can Süngü qualified to participate at the European Taekwondo Championships in Montreux, Switzerland to be held on 19-22 May 2016.
Two Turkish athletes faced each other in men’s 78 kg finals, Emre Gül won the gold and Hasan Can won the silver medal. Emre Kutalmış Ateşli won the bronze in men’s +78 kg and Simge Erensayın won gold in women’s 68 kg. Dilara Arslan and Beyza Basma in women’s +68 kg won the bronze medals. With these results, Emre Gül, Emre Kutalmış Ateşli, Simge Erensayın and Beyza Basma, earned the right to compete at the European Junior Taekwondo Championships in Russia to be held in July 2016.
In accordance with the ETU rules, the medal winners of the WTF President’s Cup qualify for the 2016 European Championships in their weight categories.
Turkey won 10 gold, 4 silver and 14 bronze medals to place second after Russia in overall ranking where Croatia took the third place. Turkey, also, place second in men’s and fourth in women’s
