Turkish athletes competing in athletics had an overall successful day during day five of Buenos Aires 2018, starting with İlyas Çanakçı ranking 2nd in his heat of the 400m final stage one with a great time of 47.96, advancing straight to the final stage two.
Runner Ömer Amaçtan smashed his own personal best in the men’s 3000m, finishing 8th with a time of 8:26.39, he will be in the final stage two. 3000m women’s runner İnci Kalkan finished 10th with an overall time of 9:26.59 and has also ran her way into the final stage two!
5000m race walker Özgür Topsakal finished 9th in the men’s stage one with an impressive time of 21:23.99 and has advanced to the final stage two. 400m runner Ilyas Canicki finished 2nd in the men’s stage one heat four with a great time of 47.96, also progressing to the next stage.
Özlem Becerek finished 3rd with 51.90 in the women’s discus throw final stage one and Kağan Kalıntaş finished 13th in the men’s discus throw with 48.78, both advancing to stage two! Kagan Aslan Kaintas finished 13th in the men’s discus throw 1.5kgm with 48.78.
Ali Berk Erol finished 11th in the high jump final stage one, meaning he will also be competing in the final stage two!
Swimmer Aleyna Özkan gave an amazing performance qualifying for the semi-finals, after clocking 1:04.41 and finishing 3rd in her heat and 8th in total. Aleyna also ranked 8th in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 1:00.77 and will be in the final!
Efe Turan finished 4th with a time of 51.60 in swimming, advancing to heat four of the men’s 100m freestyle. Demirkan Demir finished 1st in the men’s 50m breaststroke heat two, with a brilliant time of 29.25!
Windsurfer Yavuz Eda finished 19th in the Techno 293+ Race 10, 17th in Race 11 and 12th in Race 12.
In Taekwondo, Dilaria Arslan lost to Russia in the women’s +63kg quarterfinals with a decision of R3 :2.
Gymnast Bora Tarhan finished 15th with 73.231 points in the men’s all-around final subdivision one.
Turkey’s total medal count for day five is four.
On day six, we will see Turkish athletes competing in fencing, archery, beach handball, swimming, wind surfing, wrestling and athletics. Good luck to all our young athletes!
