Turkish fencer İrem Karamete earned an Olympic quota place by advancing to the semi-finals in the Fencing European Olympic Qualification Tournament in Prague, capital city of Czech Republic on 16 April.
With 5 wins and a loss in Round 1 matches, İrem Karamete seeded 3rd place in Round 2. Karamete defeated Belgian Delphine Groslambert 15-4 in table of 16 and defeated Dutch Milja Mondt 15-10 in the quarterfinals to qualify to Rio 2016 Olympic Games in foil women.
İrem Karamete will be the first fencer to represent Turkey in the Olympic Games since Los Angeles 1984.
Another Turkish fencer Enver Yıldırım in men’s sabre took 4 wins and a loss and placed 7th in Round 2. After defeating Moldavian Nicolai Zaporojcenco 15-11, Yıldırım lost to Belgian Seppe Van Holsbeke 15-7 in the quarterfinals and lost his chance to qualify to Rio 2016.
Turkish fencer Okan Karadeniz also could not qualify with 2 wins and 3 losses in the first round of the tournament.
