Turkish wrestler Emine Çakmak won a gold medal in the girl’s 49kg wrestling competition on day two of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Çakmak defeated Regina Miller 9-7 in the quarter-final round before facing Aliaksandra Kisliakova in the semi. She defeated the Belarusian wrestler 4-2 to set up a match against Ana-Maria Pirvu of Romania in the final. Çakmak exhibited a superior skill-set and won the gold medal with a comprehensive 9-0 victory.
M. Emin Cakir, who competed in the boy's 48kg Greco-Roman at the EYOF, lost in the bronze medal match to rival Maksim Stupakevich’e. Onur Yurtada (boy’s Greco-Roman 60kg) also competed for bronze after defeating Croatian Filip Vercevic with a score of 8-0. However, he was defeated by Georgian rival Nika Broladze 2-0 and finished fifth overall.
In the semi-finals of the girl’s 61kg competition, Elmas Çelik met with Azerian Marziya Sadigova and was defeated 1-0 in a close contest. In the bronze medal match, Russian Alina Kasabieva defeated Elmas meaning she also finished fifth.
Two golds in athletics
In athletics, Pınar Akyol took home gold after a throw of 17.88m in the EYOF girl’s final. In the men's 100m final, Umut Uysal also bagged gold, running a time of 10.47.
Mustafa Tekdal wins bronze
Mustafa Tekdal won a bronze medal in the 10,000m walking at the end of day two of the EYOF in Baku.
Four Turkish athletes make finals in swimming
In the girl’s 200m butterfly final, Merve Tuncel finished second to win the silver medal. Sudem Denizli swam 2:15.31 in the girl's backstroke 200m semi-final to reach the final, where she finished third to bring home the bronze.
In the men's 400m freestyle swimming final, Aslan Yiğit narrowly missed out on a medal, after a time of 3:53.96 saw him finish fourth. In the 400m individual mixed style final, Deniz Ertan also finished fourth with a time of 4:52.62.
Tennis players close day with wins
In the first round, Özlem Uslu defeated Austrian Lara Nedeljkovic in straight sets and reached the second round. In the doubles, Togan Tokac and Erden Er defeated their Russian rivals win straight sets. In girl’s doubles, Özlem Uslu and Melisa Şenli also defeated their Portuguese rivals in straight sets.
