Turkey had a highly successful third day at the Baku 2019 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), winning medals in swimming, athletics and wrestling.
Gold medal for Beril Böcekler
The first medal of the day came from talented young swimmer Beril Böcekler, whose gold medal-winning performance set an EYOF record time of 04:09.71 in the girl’s 400m freestyle final. A great year continues for Böcekler, who also qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games earlier this season.
Other medals in swimming were won by Merve Tuncel and Sudem Denizli. Tuncel won the silver medal in the girl’s 200m butterfly final with a time of 02:12.39, while Denizli won the bronze medal with a time of 02:13.51 degree in the girl’s 200m backstroke final.
Double gold in athletics
Pınar Akyol won the first gold medal in athletics with a 17.88m throw in the girl’s shot put. Sprinter Umut Uysal, who raced in the last competition of the day – the men's 100m final – also secured a gold medal with a time of 10.47.
EYOF wrestling ends with silver for Turkey
In the girl’s 65kg wrestling category, Nesrin Baş was defeated by her Belarusian rival Yana Tretsiak'a 6-4 and took home the silver medal. With this result, Turkey’s wrestling team closed the Baku 2019 EYOF in with three medals: one gold and two silvers.
